DIY Gallery Wall

About a year ago, David created a gallery wall in our main hallway. Like quite a few of the walls in our house, it was bare and I wanted to add something to it but didn’t want to commit to something that I later would take down. I decided on a gallery wall of pictures to showcase some of the memories we’ve made together as a family and because it can easily be updated with new pictures.

I used these frames from IKEA and love them as they’re affordable and minimalistic.

We decided to create a 3×2 gallery wall using six frames. I would have considered a 3×3 gallery but eventually, I want to add some sort of storage below the frames (we live in a smaller house, which I love but are always looking for creative ways to maximize our space).

Here’s how we did it:

  1. Measure the wall you want to use. We wanted our gallery wall centered. We left more room on the bottom section of the wall so that we could later add a storage unit.
  2. Measure the distance you want between each frame.
  3. Insert the pictures you want to use in the frames. This is just personal preference as I didn’t want to have to take the frames down after they were up on the wall.
  4. Hang the frames. We hung the frames with screws but I have seen a lot of people use contact tape and I think that might be a better option long term especially if you decide to take it down – you won’t have holes to fill.
  5. NOTE: Again, a personal preference, when I put the pictures up, I try to make sure I don’t have the same people beside each other in each picture. This is NOT a big deal at all. I always seem to have more pictures of Emme than anyone else so this is a little harder to do but it’s something I think about when I put up pictures.
